The Frustration of Clogged Drains

It can be maddening to watch as dirty water just sits there, with no place to go.  You want your clogged drain to open up, move freely, and allow you to get on with your day.  But, as you stand ankle-deep in the shower, turn off the water to your toilet to prevent an overflow, and run your garbage disposal, to no avail, you realize you need to hit the “pause button” on your day, and take some time to deal with this problem.

Before you call a plumber, you may attempt fixing the problem yourself.  Many homeowners’ shower drains become clogged, pretty close to the surface, as hair tangles around the drain cover, shampoo, conditioner, and soap residue collect on the hair, creating a sizable, and immovable clog.  Likewise, too much toilet paper could be causing that blockage.

Home Remedies to Unclog Drains

  • Make a mixture of 1:1 baking soda and white vinegar.  Mix it in a portable cup, over the drain, as it will fizz.  Begin with 1/3 cup of baking soda to 1/3 cup of vinegar.  The fizzing action will work to dislodge whatever is caught within your pipes.  Give it up to an hour, then run hot water.  If this doesn’t work, increase the amounts and leave overnight.  It may take that long to dislodge any dirt and grime within the pipes.
  • Try boiling water, either by itself, or after putting a 1/2 cup of grease cutting dish detergent down the drain.  The dish soap will disintegrate the greasy residue and the hot water will wash it away.  This is especially good to unclog drains in toilets.
  • Use a wire hanger to ‘snake’ the opening of your drain and pull out the ball of hairy “gunk” that’s preventing your shower from draining.  Hereafter, vow to clean that drain after showering!
  • Plungers can be a homeowner’s best friend.  Keep one handy for each toilet, and even keep one (clean and specifically NOT for your toilet) under the kitchen sink.  For toilet clogs, shut off the water and plunge to dislodge the blockage.  This has been the tried-and-true method for generations.  For double kitchen sinks, and disposal clogs, get a small kitchen plunger and plunge the sink drain opposite the disposal.  This works to dislodge the clog and get your disposal and sink running without problems.

When using caustic chemicals-even the over-the-counter drain cleaners-consult Bill Fenwick.  Many homes have pipes that won’t withstand the powerful agents in these remedies.  Likewise, if someone suggests a “snake”.  Fragile pipes can be punctured or damaged by this apparatus. Tools to remove clogs deep within your plumbing system should only be handled by a professional.
